Sürtünme: Is the Form of Prayer in the Quran? Between Ritual and Soul bir fikir değil; bugün davranışını yeniden yazacak bir eşik.
Friction: Questioning ritual doesn't destroy faith; it deepens it.
Beginning
When I was learning to pray as a child, I always remember being told "do it like this, stand like this, recite like this." Why 4 rakats? Why do we fold our hands? Why is Fatiha obligatory but any other surah works? The answer I always got was: "The Prophet prayed like this."
True — but what does the Quran say?
Prayer in the Quran
The Quran uses the concept of "salat" in approximately 90 places. However, a striking observation emerges:
What the Quran Says
- Commands prayer (Al-Baqarah 2:43, An-Nisa 4:103).
- Specifies prayer times: morning, evening, night (Hud 11:114, Al-Isra 17:78).
- Determines the qibla: direction of Masjid al-Haram (Al-Baqarah 2:144).
- Uses the concepts of sajdah (prostration) and ruku (bowing) (Al-Hajj 22:77).
- Asks for prayer with khushu (reverence) (Al-Mu'minun 23:2).
- Calls for Friday congregational prayer (Al-Jumu'ah 62:9).
What the Quran Doesn't Say
- Rakat counts (dawn 2, noon 4, afternoon 4, sunset 3, night 4) are not in the Quran.
- Hand placement is not in the Quran.
- Tashahhud (sitting prayer) is not in the Quran.
- Salawat prayers are not in the Quran.
- The obligation of Fatiha is not explicitly stated in the Quran.
- Subhanaka prayer is not in the Quran.
All of these details come from hadith and Prophetic practice.
Sectarian Differences
| Topic | Hanafi | Shafi'i | Maliki | Hanbali |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hand position | Below navel | On chest | At sides | On chest |
| Basmala | Silent | Aloud | Not recited | Aloud |
| Amin | Silent | Aloud | Silent | Aloud |
| Qunut prayer | In Witr | In Fajr | None | In Fajr |
| Mid-takbir | Hands down | Hands raised | Varies | Hands raised |
How do so many different interpretations emerge from the same Prophet's practice? Because hadith narrations vary, and each school preferred different narrations.
The Spirit of Prayer: The Quran's True Message
The Quran focuses on the spirit of prayer more than its form:
"Establish prayer for My remembrance." — Taha 20:14
"Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing." — Al-Ankabut 29:45
"Woe to those who pray, who are heedless of their prayer." — Al-Ma'un 107:4-5
This last verse is striking: the Quran says "woe" to those who pray — because they perform prayer in form while losing its spirit.
Personal Approach
I pray. But when I pray, instead of asking "Did I place my left foot correctly in this rakat?", I ask "How present am I with God in this moment?"
Ritual is a vehicle carrying us to God. When the vehicle becomes the purpose — when we debate hand placement while forgetting the heart's reverence — worship becomes a cardboard mockup.
The form of prayer can be debated; the spirit of prayer cannot. That spirit is: establishing a conscious, humble, deep connection with God.

- 2-4. gün: Aynı davranışı her tetiklenişte 90 saniye geciktir.
- 5-7. gün: Geciktirme yerine yeni mikro davranışı sabitle (tek adım, tek ölçüm).
Teachings from This Content
Intention Protocol
Before beginning worship, ask: Why am I performing this act? To draw closer to God, or from social pressure? Intention determines the meaning of actions. Ritual without intention is a body without soul.
