Sürtünme: Perception of Dogs in Islamic Law: Inter-Sectarian Approaches bir fikir değil; bugün davranışını yeniden yazacak bir eşik.
Friction: Truth doesn't emerge until memorized assumptions are broken.
Beginning
I grew up in a family from the Shafi'i tradition. As a child, I always heard "if a dog enters the house, angels won't enter." For this reason, I lived for a long time believing dogs were "haram." But life opened a different path for me: today I live with a dog I adopted at a young age. As I witnessed his loyalty and love, I asked myself: Does religion really declare dogs haram?
This essay is both a summary of my research seeking the answer to this question and a part of my personal journey.
Dogs in the Qur'an
The word "dog" appears in three contexts in the Qur'an:
1. The Story of the Companions of the Cave (Al-Kahf 18:18, 22)
The dog faithfully guarding at the entrance of the cave is one of the symbols of the story.
- Fakhr al-Din al-Razi notes that the dog plays a protective, not negative, role in this story (Mafatih al-Ghayb).
- al-Tabari interprets the mention of the dog as a sign that God's mercy extends to animals as well.
2. Hunting Dogs (Al-Ma'idah 5:4)
It is explicitly stated that prey caught by trained hunting dogs is halal.
- Muhammad Asad states this verse proves that dogs cannot be absolutely impure (The Message of the Qur'an).
- Ibn Kathir emphasizes that the hunting dog example demonstrates the legitimate use of dogs in Muslim life.
3. Metaphorical Usage (Al-A'raf 7:176)
The dog is used as a metaphor for insatiability and greed.
- al-Zamakhshari states this points not to the nature of the animal but to moral weakness in humans (al-Kashshaf).
Conclusion: There is no ruling in the Qur'an declaring dogs "haram." On the contrary, they appear within the framework of loyalty, benefit, and metaphorical teaching.
Dog Narrations in Hadith
Dogs are addressed along three main axes in authentic hadith:
- Cleanliness: "If a dog licks a vessel, wash it seven times, one with earth" (Muslim, Tahara, 91).
- Benefit: Permission for hunting and herding dogs (Bukhari, Dhaba'ih, 6).
- Negative descriptions: "Angels do not enter a house with a dog" (Bukhari, Libas, 94).
David A. King relates most of these narrations to early-period health and hygiene concerns (Animals in Islamic Tradition, 2012).
Sectarian Views on Dogs
| School | View | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Hanafi | Only saliva is impure; touching doesn't cause impurity | Sarakhsi, al-Mabsut |
| Shafi'i | Entire body is impure; contacted area must be washed | Nawawi, al-Majmu' |
| Maliki | Dog is not inherently impure; only saliva needs cleaning | Ibn Rushd, Bidayat al-Mujtahid |
| Hanbali | Close to Shafi'i, but some usage permissions are broader | Ibn Qudama, al-Mughni |
| Ja'fari | Dog is impure; only hunting dogs are excepted | Sheikh Tusi, al-Mabsut |
In the Shafi'i tradition I come from, the classification of dogs as completely impure formed the basis of the strict interpretations I heard as a child. Yet other schools have much more flexible approaches.
Sources of Disagreement
- Hadith interpretation differences: Some schools took narrations literally and generalized, others limited them with context.
- Hygiene and health: Risks carried by dogs in desert society influenced juristic reasoning.
- Custom: In Arab society, dogs were sometimes identified with danger and disease.
Critique of Sectarianism
The Qur'an's warning is clear:
"And do not say about what your tongues assert of untruth, 'This is lawful and this is unlawful,' to invent falsehood about God." — An-Nahl 16:116
- Yaşar Nuri Öztürk states that introducing a ruling not found in the Qur'an into religion constitutes "slander against God."
- Edip Yüksel emphasizes that declaring what God made halal as haram contradicts the principle of tawhid.
- Wael Hallaq argues that schools of law are often products of historical context and should not be presented as absolute divine rulings (A History of Islamic Legal Theories).
Modern Approaches
- Yusuf al-Qaradawi states that prohibitions regarding dogs are health-related and do not express absolute prohibition (The Lawful and the Prohibited).
- Seyyed Hossein Nasr argues that all living beings share in divine mercy and dogs cannot be exempt (Man and Nature).
- WHO data shows that dog-related diseases can be prevented at a 99% rate through vaccination and hygiene.
Today, dogs are not just hunters or guards; they are guides for the visually impaired, therapy companions for psychological support, and sometimes simply loyal family members.
My Journey
I grew up in a Shafi'i family, believing dogs were "haram." But today, there is a dog in my life. His loyalty, compassion, and love made me think: How right is it to call a creature of God "haram" just because of a sectarian interpretation?
There is no such ruling in the Qur'an. The disagreements in hadith can be explained through historical context. Sectarian interpretations are valuable, but they cannot be presented as God's absolute word.
A dog is not haram to me; on the contrary, it is a companion that reminds me of God's mercy every day.
With love to my dear friend Polo…

- 2-4. gün: Aynı davranışı her tetiklenişte 90 saniye geciktir.
- 5-7. gün: Geciktirme yerine yeni mikro davranışı sabitle (tek adım, tek ölçüm).

Primary Source Protocol
Before making any judgment on a topic, always return to the primary source (Qur'an). Read secondary sources (hadith, fiqh) in context. Compare sectarian views; never accept a single interpretation as absolute truth.
